Round 12 Vs Merewether Carlton @ Townson Oval

Maitland Private Hospital 1st Grade

Maitland 12 (Howell, Maloney tries, Maloney conv)
Merewether 19
Premier 1 Bar TV Highlights
Another disappointing loss on a tough day at Townson leaves Firsts just 2 points inside finals contention ahead of Nelson Bay. Injuries before and after kickoff forced a lineup reshuffle that welcomed back winger Rob-dog Williamson from a busted jaw and prop Laurence Burdekin from the lower grades. The Blacks struggled to penetrate the Greens impressive defence, struggling with ball retention at the ruck and made too many errors to build pressure, despite a glut of possession and territory. Merewether capitalized on the few slipups made at the other end by Maitland, scoring off scrappy mistakes and poor defensive reads, but in general out-enthused the men in black to hold on against some late points. The Blacks looked good with ball in hand, needing only some more polish in attack and patience under pressure to put together a complete performance. Biz, Trav and Maxy were the Blacks best, as well as the staunch defensive line out crew.

Maitland 12 (Batey, Punch tries, Punch conv)
Merewether 21
Premier 2 Bar TV Highlights

In a tight but scrappy game where neither team could build phases Seconds led 12-7 at half time thanks to tries returning handsome inside back Pat Batey and prodigal son Punch. Back row combination of Fraser, Frenchy and Affo were tireless in attack and had a hand in both tries. The Blacks defence turned to water though when a vast expanse of Green coloured prop built up some momentum to score, and again when a similarly sized lock picked on some smaller opposition to stroll through for the match winner. A disappointing scoreless second half capped off a frustrating day for Batey/McKay brains trust, dropping back to 4th on the table.

Premier 3 Bar TV Highlights
Robust prop Danny Lewer will be wishing he could go back to high school after scoring for the third time in 3 weeks, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Thirds’ second loss of the season. Coaches’ player Adz McCarthy scooped up an embarrassing Greens knock-on to score from close range and go into halftime 7-all,  before Lewer crossed to take the lead. The Slime eventually levelled up to a sea-gulling prop, and then crossed out wide to take home the chocolates.
