Round 8 Vs Lake Macquarie @ Walters Park

Maitland Private Hospital 1st Grade
Maitland 24 (Howell, Stafford, Clacherty, Maloney tries, Maloney 2 conv)
Lake Macquarie 37
A reshuffled side from last week’s win did well to nullify the Roos sizeable weight advantage up front, but it was their speed men who outmuscled ours, scoring in counterattack and broken play. After an evenly matched first half, Lake Macquarie scored two quick tries and the Black boys struggled to hold onto the ball for multiple phases, getting caught in a wrestle with their big boys. Captain Chris Logan was Maitland’s best, with had a hand in two long range tries, making several Slater-esque kick returns with interest and stopped a barnstorming brick shithouse down the wing. Credit also to Davo and Isaac Enright who led the mammoth defensive effort, chopping down tree trunks all day.

Bottrell Group 2nd Grade
Maitland 57 (De Rocquigny 2, Punch 2, Affleck, Howell, Skinner, Connolly, Armstrong tries, Punch 6 conv)
Lake Macquarie 14
Seconds did it easily again this week with the impressive return to action of Michael Howell as well the inclusion of Colts rep flyhalf Luke Rees and Kenneth star Helpsy. Frenchy bagged a double as well as Punch, who tallied 22 points. The Roos did manage to pull off the old prop-hooker lineout move in a piece of pure Lake Macquarie gold.

Firestorm 3rd Grade
Maitland 24 (Courtney, Runchel, McCarthy, King tries, Golledge 2 conv)
Lake Macquarie 14
Thirds maintained their winning ways in a close fought contest after going into halftime 7-all. Several backline changes meant the return of scrumhalf Adam McCarthy, who scored, centre Sam Enright, who threw the intercepted pass for the Roos first try, as well as Mick ‘Punchy’ Sager, who received a free nose alteration. ‘Brick’ Courtney and Dan Runchel both barged over from close, whilst Harry King scored a speccy off a Golledge 5th tackle option cross kick.
